Jewellery Care Guide

Jewellery Care

One thing we cannot stress enough is that, although our jewellery is made from durable precious metals and designed to withstand the test of time, it is not indestructible and may be damaged if mistreated. Our jewellery is designed to embrace its imperfections, with unique textures that will evolve with wear. Over time, plating may begin to wear in certain areas, and you may notice new scratches and dents. This is considered normal wear and tear and does not indicate a faulty product. Like scars on skin, fading, dents, and scratches tell the story of the piece as it develops over time alongside its owner.

Daily Use

The chemicals in perfumes and other products such as body creams, soaps ect can cause damage to precious metals over time. We recommend putting your jewellery on after you’ve allowed products like perfumes to settle, and creams to sink into your skin. We recommend removing jewellery before washing your hands, bathing and especially before swimming in a pool as the chlorine is not good for the metal and can tarnish and fade its shine. You should keep your jewellery stored in a dark, dry place such as a jewellery box or the original Gallery of Nothing box you received it in. All jewellery should be removed before doing anything active that could potentially cause damage.

General Cleaning

When cleaning a piece we recommend using a soft toothbrush and washing up liquid in water. Dry carefully with a soft cloth. You can have a piece professionally cleaned by a jeweller using a piece of equipment called an ultrasonic that cleans pieces in water with vibrations. This will give your piece a more thorough clean. Please be aware that if it is a piece with stones (especially large stones), that the vibrations can crack stones if they already have tiny cracks or are heavily included, so please consider the risks and do it at your own discretion.

Diamonds and other Precious Stones

Diamonds. They may be made from one of the toughest most durable materials on the planet, that does not make them unbreakable. That is relevant to all precious stones we use. Diamonds, Sapphires, Emeralds, Rubies, they can all be shattered with carelessness. If you purchase a piece with a large stone you must always be conscious of that stone and do your best not to knock it into hard surfaces, especially with force.

Plating

Majority of our pieces have different platings on them in certain areas. A lot of this plating is inside cuts and crevices in the metal so it is less likely to be rubbed against or scratched. Plating that is rubbing against other materials regularly (e.g the back of a pendant against a jumper), can begin to fade over time, this is completely normal and to be expected. If you scratch plating with something rough or sharp it is likely to mark and reveal the metal underneath so please treat plated pieces with care.
